Au Revoir Carrie Bradshaw

With the recent announcement,  'And Just Like That’, is officially done at the end of the current season, The Sex and the City saga officially draws to a close, marking the end of an era. While the spin-off may have had its own unique path, and one that was very polarizing, there is no denying both series’ impact on popular culture and its celebration of female independence and self-expression remains undeniable. Like many, Sex and the City 100000% left an imprint on me and while I wasn’t a fan of the new series, I watched every episode. I also watched every movie and documentary related to anything remotely connected to these shows like it was a religion. Some folks have Seinfeld or The Office (both incredible) as a “background” show, mine has often been some form of SATC. I felt it only right to pay a little homage to this show, those ladies and of course the fashion.

When Sex and the City burst onto our screens in the late 90s, it forever changed the way we viewed female friendships, relationships, and independence. More than just a show about four women navigating New York City, it became a cultural phenomenon.Beyond the glitz and glamour, it played a pivotal role in redefining the portrayal of independent women on television. The show fearlessly explored topics like female sexuality, career ambitions, and the complexities of adult relationships with a refreshing honesty. Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda, despite their differences, showcased the strength and resilience of women supporting each other through life's triumphs and tribulations. They challenged traditional narratives and empowered a generation of women to pursue their dreams, embrace their individuality, and prioritize their own happiness. I never fully subscribed to one character (aka “I’m a Carrie”) but as a young 20-something this show was an inspiration on how I saw my future self, and of course the fashion!....I was a fashion school student after all.

Carrie, wasn't just wearing clothes; she was telling a story with every outfit. Her fearless experimentation, mixing high fashion with vintage finds, and embracing unconventional pairings, made her a true style icon. From her signature tutu in the opening credits to her Manolo obsession, Carrie's wardrobe became a character in itself. Her ability to effortlessly blend different aesthetics demonstrated how fashion can be a powerful form of self-expression and creativity.

Sex and the City also masterfully illustrated the intricate connections between fashion, music, art, and design. The vibrant backdrop of New York City, with its diverse art scene, cutting-edge design, and pulsating music landscape, provided the perfect canvas for the characters' lives. Carrie's eclectic apartment, filled with unique furniture and art, mirrored her adventurous fashion sense. This seamless integration highlighted how these creative disciplines are not isolated but rather deeply intertwined, each influencing and enriching the other. A bold fashion choice might be inspired by an avant-garde art exhibit, or a new song could spark a revolutionary design concept.

And just like that…. we say au revoir to Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte, you will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
