Silver or gold.

Let’s talk metal!

I’d be lying if I said picking out hardware isn’t one of my favorite activities. There are just so many beautiful options out there today from faucet designs to the back plate for your light switches. But making these decisions can be very overwhelming with so many choices and add on top of that what kind of metal to go with. So let’s dive in to my thoughts on metal....

Nickel or chrome, often misconceived as casual, can hold a world of elegance within its polished or brushed finishes. Its cool, silvery sheen provides a sophisticated backdrop that can effortlessly blend with both contemporary and traditional settings. Polished nickel hardware shines particularly well in spaces that lean toward a modern aesthetic, yet it remains versatile enough to complement a heritage-inspired design. The timelessness of nickel and chrome lies in its ability to adopt a gentle wear over time, adding layers of character and warmth that enrich your home's narrative. Its understated beauty can be just as decorative as brass or gold, offering a subtle, enduring charm that whispers rather than shouts.

On the other hand, brass brings a touch of the Bohemian gilded age into your home. With its warm golden hues and rich historical allure, brass hardware is celebrated for its ability to develop a natural patina which only enhances its vintage appeal over the years. This patina lends a sense of lived-in luxury, making each piece unique and steeped in story. Brass is ideal for those who appreciate a sense of drama and opulence in their interiors, seamlessly bridging the gap between the past and present. Its gleaming finish can add a touch of glamour to any room, evoking a sense of timeless elegance that's both captivating and comforting. Gold is by far the hardware metal of choice as of late. It is important to consider the enduring qualities of nickel, chrome and brass. Gold can certainly add a splash of luxury, but it can also over stay it’s welcome and start to feel dated (think the 80's).

Often times I hear from clients that they have to chose a particular metal because that’s the color of something else. Example ...”we have to chose chrome cabinet handles because our appliance are stainless”. Absolutely not! Mixing metals is not only beyond acceptable it should be embraced! A chrome faucet sitting in a kitchen with brass cabinet hardware is not only bold but it is sexy as hell. Mixing metals allows you to add an element of drama by doing very little.

Ultimately, your choice between what hardware to go with should reflect your personal style and the desired atmosphere of your home. Whether you lean towards the cool sophistication of nickel or the warm patina of brass, both options provide a canvas for creating a space that's richly layered and romantically timeless.
